The drive from Delaware City to Chicago was epic – 775 miles of epic actually. Our experience of driving around the east coast has been limited to major freeways and toll roads and this means driving along corridors fenced in with trees. We did this for most of the day, the monotony relieved by the occasional tunnel through the Appalachians and a sizable bridge or two. But early in the morning, as dawn broke and we drove through the southern Pennsylvania farm country with glimpses of men in wide brimmed straw hats on bicycles, it was certainly picturesque.
